The IWC manufacture was opened in the end of 1860-es by a Boston businessmen Florentine Ariosto Jones.
That time there was a lack of high quality watches on the USA market that just passed though the civil war.
Looking for professional watch makers who were ready to work for small wage, young Jones moved to small Swiss town Shaffhausen where a powerful watch guild was.
Jones transported mechanisms of local craftsmen to America. But when import laws changed it became unprofitable to do that. That was the way Jones decoded to found the first and single Swiss manufacture called International Watch Company Shaffhausen. An interesting fact is that they not occasionally used Shaffhausen in the company's name.
